My Japanese girlfriend went back from Japan recently. She brought me a Kadomatsu as a souvenir.
Kadomatsu is the New Year's decorative pine branches. Japanese people decorate pine branches with three bamboos that are cut diagonally.
In Japanese, New Year is called “oshougatsu(お正月)”, and the very first day of the year is called “gantan(元旦)”.There are many events and customs to celebrate New Year’s Day, Kadomatsu is one of them. We can say Kadomatsu is New Year pine tree branch decoration.
